How to play Snake

Start Snake by looking at the playing area and its controls. Keep collecting apples. Hitting a wall or your body ends the round; filling the entire board wins. Look at what changes after your first action. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Review a difficult moment

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Keep collecting apples. Hitting a wall or your body ends the round; filling the entire board wins. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. The example below illustrates a decision.

Step by step

  1. Press Play to start the movement.
  2. Turn with arrow keys, swipes or the on-screen direction buttons.
  3. Each apple adds ten points and makes the snake longer.
  4. Pause when needed or start a new round.

Controls

Keyboard arrows, swipe gestures or the four direction buttons. Play / pause controls the movement. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Look at the feedback after the action.

A useful example

When moving right, you may turn up or down, but cannot turn immediately left into your own neck. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

The snake continues moving between inputs. Plan a route with space to turn. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
