How to play Peg Solitaire

Choose a round of Peg Solitaire and settle into its rules. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Look at what changes after your first action. Read the objective before making your first input. Use the example below to understand a decision.

English 33-hole cross; central starting gap; any final single peg wins.

A careful first round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Check the rules when you are unsure.

Step by step

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

Peg–peg–empty in one line permits one jump. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

Diagonal jumps and pulling are not allowed. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
