How to play Chess Tactics Puzzles

Try Chess Tactics Puzzles at your own pace and keep its objective in view. Force checkmate in the stated number of moves. Look at what changes after your first action. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Practise with 64 king-and-queen checkmate positions: 48 mate-in-one puzzles and 16 mate-in-two puzzles. This collection focuses on delivering checkmate.

Notice the feedback

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Force checkmate in the stated number of moves. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Step by step

  1. Read the mate objective.
  2. Choose a legal attacking move.
  3. The defender replies automatically where another move is required.
  4. Finish the forced mating line.

Controls

Select pieces and targets; use Hint or New puzzle. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

A legal check is wrong when it permits escape from the required mate. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Read the matching step again.

Watch out for this

The objective is forced mate, not merely checking the king. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
